Alternative Fuel Vehicles

Chicks dig a Seattle man driving an alternative fuel vehicle. By chicks, I mean baby birds, of course, who will thank you for being so environmentally conscious, and for helping to save Seattle. Be a hero, drive a zero-emission vehicle.

An alternative fuel vehicle is a vehicle that runs on a fuel other than traditional gasoline or diesel. Basically, these vehicles utilize any method of powering an engine that does not involve petroleum. Alternative fuel vehicles are used by many people: state and federal agencies, private companies, and consumers. They come in a variety of makes and models and run on a number of different fuels.

To find light- and heavy-duty alternative fuel vehicles, and compare their specifications, please use the Alternative Fuels and Advanced Vehicles Data Center's (AFDC) Vehicle Make/Model Search.

According to the AFDC, there are more than a dozen alternative and advanced fuels in production or use today. Although government-regulated and voluntary private fleets are the primary users of these fuels, consumers have been showing a growing interest in them. Use of these fuels is critical to reducing dependence on foreign oil and improving air quality.

Alternative fueling stations are located throughout the United States and their availability continues to grow. Please visit AFDC's alternative fueling station web page to search for alternative fueling stations near you, and/or to map a route that includes alternative fueling stations along the way.
