Seasonal Health and Safety Tips for Pets

Do you have a Seattle outdoor dog, and not because he's kind of ugly?  If you do, you need to be mindful of the effects of extreme temperatures on your pet.  And not just because they can become radioactive...

Extreme temperatures in the summer and winter months can be dangerous for pets, especially those kept outdoors. During the winter holidays, plants and decorations used in your homes can also pose a threat to your pet. The Federal Citizen Information Center's (FCIC) web site offers some seasonal pet health tips to help you keep your pets safe and healthy during the summer and winter months.

The Army Medical Department (AMEDD) also offers information on their web site about preventing pet heat injuries, which includes how to recognize the signs and symptoms of pet heat exhaustion.

Pets, like humans, are at risk for contracting Lyme disease from ticks during warmer months. You may wish to speak with your veterinarian about Lyme disease vaccinations for your pet.
