In 1979, President Jimmy Carter designated June as Black Music Month. There are many famous black musicians, including Ray Charles, Louis Armstrong, Mahalia Jackson, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, and Aretha Franklin. These artists continue to influence musicians today.
