Sure, you could put up that poster of Albert Einstein surfing in your Seattle workplace, but wouldn't it be more effective, and legal, to put up those DOL posters? Sure they are plain, and a bit overly stimulating, but maybe you can dress them up a bit. Just don't tell big brother.
Both state and federal labor laws require certain posters to be posted in the workplace. These laws require employers to display official Department of Labor (DOL) posters where employees can readily observe them. The purpose of the posters is to explain labor laws to the company's employees. Some of the Department of Labor's posters are available in languages other than English. DOL provides the posters at no cost to employers. The Department of Labor also provides electronic copies of the required posters.
Please note that posting requirements vary by statute; that is, not all employers are covered by each of the DOL's statutes and thus may not be required to post a specific notice. For example, some small businesses may not be covered by the Family and Medical Leave Act and thus would not be subject to the Act's posting requirements.
You may wish to download federal workplace posters and other useful information from the DOL.
If you know the specific poster that you need, you may contact the DOL's Office of Small Business Programs by calling 1-888-9-SBREFA (1-888-972-7332).
To learn which posters are required by your state government, please contact your state department of labor.
