Rock Art

If you are looking for Seattle art that rocks, or Seattle art that is literally made of rock, the info below about rock art is for you. Don't just sit there like a boulder, make like a Rolling Stone and get into the arts Rock art is a term in archaeology for any man-made markings made on natural stone. There are two types of rock art:

  • Pictographs are figures painted on rock surfaces.
    • Painting of a rock with such things as animal blood, plant materials or other pigmented materials. The best preserved pictography is found under sheltering overhangs and in caves.
  • Petroglyphs or geoglyphs are figures carved or pecked into the surfaces.
    • Petroglyphs are created by rock removal, including scratching, carving, drilling and sculpting. Petroglyphs remove the rock’s surface, exposing the contrasting lighter interior. Sometimes petroglyphs are painted or polished.
Most petroglyphs and pictographs are found on the walls of a cave or rock shelter. Types of figures common in rock art include wavy or zigzag lines, dots, designs made of dots and cross-hatching, human figures, and the star or cogwheel.
