Lost or Stolen Cred Card

Losing sucks, especially when it involves losing a credit card or some other important item.  The Seattle police can help, sometimes they actually find your stuff, but in the meantime protect yourself and your identity.

If you suspect your credit card was lost or stolen, report it to the police immediately. Be sure to request a copy of the police report, including your case number, because your credit card company, bank, or insurance company may request such documentation.

After you report the missing card to the police, contact your credit card company or issuing bank immediately. A telephone number for customer service and information on how to report a missing card should be located on your monthly statement. Ask to have your account closed, and to have a new card issued with a new number. Follow up your telephone call with a letter summarizing your request.

If you feel that your credit card was stolen to commit identity theft, file a report with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Although the FTC does not have the authority to bring criminal cases, they do put your information into a secure consumer fraud database and may, in appropriate instances, share it with other law enforcement agencies and private entities, including any companies about which you may complain. You can call the FTC's ID Theft Hotline at 1-877-IDTHEFT (1-877-438-4338) or use their Online Complaint Assistant. You may also wish to view the additional steps that you should take as a victim of identity theft.

If you find an error on your credit card bill/bank statement, you should contact your credit card company/bank as soon as possible. Most credit card companies have specific policies regarding the way they handle disputes, so you may wish to review your card member agreement for additional information about your rights and recourse. You may also wish to look at the back of your credit card statement for detailed instructions on how to dispute unauthorized charges.

Furthermore, we recommend that after disputing the charges by telephone that you send your dispute in writing to the address on the back of your statement. It is also a good idea to start a file, being careful to maintain copies of all correspondence and records related to your credit card dispute.
