Free Tax Assistance

Perhaps you live and work in Baie-Comeau and need some help with your tax returns. There are programs available to you in Baie-Comeau that can assist you with tax preparation, and some are completely free.

Free help with taxes is available to people with low to moderate income, the elderly and military personnel and their families through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS):

  • VITA offers free tax help to people who generally earn less than $42,000 and cannot prepare their own taxes. Most locations also offer free electronic filing.
  • The Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) Program offers free tax help to taxpayers who are 60 and older. Trained volunteers from nonprofit organizations provide free tax counseling and basic income tax return preparation for senior citizens. Volunteers who provide tax counseling are often retired individuals associated with nonprofit organizations that receive grants from the IRS.
  • The military partners with the IRS in the VITA Program. The Armed Forces Tax Council (AFTC) consists of the tax program coordinators for the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. The AFTC oversees the operation of the military tax programs worldwide, and serves as the main conduit for outreach by the IRS to military personnel and their families. Marines, airmen, soldiers, sailors, guardsmen, and their families worldwide get tax preparation help at offices within their installations. Please visit the Free Tax Help for the Military webpage for additional information.

To find the location, dates and hours of the closest VITA/TCE site, call the IRS at 1-800-829-1040.
