The Solar America Initiative (SAI), a part of the Advanced Energy Initiative, aims to accelerate the development of advanced solar power materials. The SAI's mission is to help lower the cost of solar electricity so that it is cost-competitive across all U.S. market sectors by 2015. Renewable energy supplies, such as solar power, diversify the nation's electric supply options, reduce the need for new conventional power plants, and improve the environment by avoiding fossil fuel, nuclear and natural gas generation.
The Department of Energy's (DOE) Solar Energy Technology Program (SETP) works to achieve the SAI's goals through partnerships with industry participants, universities, federal and state government agencies, and other non-governmental agencies. In addition, the DOE's national laboratories provide research and development support, independent testing and evaluation of deliverables for partners, and modeling and analytical support for funding opportunities and technical monitoring.
