Protecting Your Home
Keeping your home and loved ones in Baie-Comeau safe and sound involves a bit of work. It may be a good idea to invest in some security lighting. With only moderate price tags and excellent theft-deterrent properties, it’s no surprise that security lighting sales have grown recently in Baie-Comeau.
Home security lighting should not be overlooked when planning a home security setup. While lighting may not directly protect valuables – like a safe does – it has a large deterrent affect.
When lights are implemented, the homeowner should consider his neighbor’s property rights. Good lighting should not over-illuminate, and the light should not “spill over” into neighboring yards, or worse, windows.
The quality of home security lighting varies, of course. There are many kinds of security lights available on the market, including porch lighting, halogen floodlights, infrared detection lights, and motion sensor lighting.
Porch lighting is a popular form of security lighting, and is the preferred choice for many households. Porch lighting provides a permanent source of light at very low wattage. Usually a light detector controls a timer, so the light will automatically turn on at dusk.
Another popular type of home security lighting is halogen floodlight systems. These kinds of systems have become more popular with homeowners in that last few years. This may be due to lower prices – as the lighting technology improves, manufacturing costs go down.
Very powerful halogen lights are available on the market – up to 1000 watts or more. To choose an appropriate light, homeowners should consider the size of the area they wish to illuminate, and their budget.
Many halogen light systems are controlled by motion sensor. These sensors work by detecting movement. For example, if an uninvited guest entered your backyard, a sensor would detect his or her movement and would activate the lighting system.
More complex lighting systems will use Passive InfraRed (PIR) sensors. PIR sensors work by detecting the “black body radiation” that humans give off in the form of body heat. Small animals or birds will not usually trip lighting systems that use PIR sensors.
These are just two security lighting options. There are many other lights, sensors, and detectors for you to consider. Make sure that you understand your lighting system before you implement it.
