Consumer Complaints
If you have found that a Baie-Comeau business or company has treated you unfairly, the information and links below can help your voice be heard.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) offers the following recommendations on how to resolve consumer disputes with a company:
- If you are having a problem with a company, you should first attempt to resolve it within the company. Notify the company of the problem in writing, and what action you feel should be taken as a result of the problem. If the problem remains unresolved, submit (in writing) your complaint to the company's headquarters or main office. The Consumer Action web site provides a directory of national consumer affairs offices for a number of companies.
- Contact your State Consumer Protection Office and file a complaint. Ask if there is anything their office can do to assist you and for other alternatives.
- Contact your local Better Business Bureau (BBB) to file a complaint. The BBB keeps a database of all complaints that are filed with them. This database is public information, and is an excellent resource for "checking out a company." Depending on the nature of the complaint, they may contact the company on behalf of the consumer.
- Contact the FTC. While the FTC does not resolve individual consumer problems, your complaint helps them investigate fraud, and can lead to law enforcement action.
- Complaints about e-commerce (business or trade that takes place on the Internet) across international borders can be filed at http://www.econsumer.gov.
- If all else fails, seek legal counsel.
The Consumer Action web site also provides samples of complaint letters for vaious types of complaints.
