Art and Architecture in Federal Buildings
What does a Federal Building in Baie-Comeau say about the city, state, or nation it dwells within? Everything! If you happen to live in a city or near a city with a federal building, it is your right as a citizen to utilize the services provided in that building.
Most of the interaction between the government and its citizens occurs in General Services Administration (GSA) administered buildings. Federal buildings express the image of the government to the public. The GSA provides national leadership, policy direction, and standards in the areas of architecture and engineering, urban development, design, fine arts, historic preservation, construction services, and project management. To assure a high standard of excellence for the American public, GSA engages the best private-sector architects and engineers to design, renovate, and construct federal buildings.
In addition, the GSA's Art in Architecture Program commissions the nation's leading artists to create large-scale works of art for new federal buildings. These works enhance the civic meaning of federal architecture and showcase the vibrancy of American visual arts. Together, the art and architecture of federal buildings create a lasting cultural legacy for the people of the United States.
The Library of Congress also has a collection of documents pertaining to government facilities, which includes architectural photographs and other materials.
